LESSON 5 OF 7

Connect issues and supporting files

Show a dependency and attach the context needed to act.

Overview

An issue relationship explains how one task connects to another. If ordering paint depends on the client approving the colors, “Order paint” is blocked by “Confirm paint colors.”

Related and duplicate links describe other connections when there is no dependency. Supporting files keep the information needed to act beside the work.

Before you start

Have two related issues ready and identify a useful supporting file or link, such as the approved color sheet.

1Open the dependent task

Open the task that cannot proceed yet and find its Relations section.

2Add the dependency

Link the task as blocked by the issue that must happen first. Choose the relationship that describes the work accurately.

3Check both directions

Open the linked issue to verify the relationship. The dependent task should show Blocked by; the prerequisite should show Blocking.

4Attach the supporting context

Use the file or link option available in Attachments. Check that the attachment gives the person doing the work the information they need, and continue updating each issue’s own status.

Put it into practice

The dependency points in the correct direction and the supporting information is attached to the work.
