From agreement to delivery

LESSON 5 OF 6

Connect a goal to delivery work

Show how an initiative, project, milestone, and issue relate.

Overview

Each planning level answers a different question. An initiative describes a shared outcome, a project describes one job, a milestone describes a checkpoint, and an issue describes a task.

For a studio refresh, the repaint project contributes to the reopening goal. “Ready to paint” is a checkpoint, and “Confirm paint colors” is one task needed to reach it.

Before you start

Choose an initiative with a linked project, a project milestone, and an issue that contributes to that milestone.

1Start with the shared goal

Open the initiative, read its outcome, and open one linked delivery project.

2Follow the plan to the task

Review a project milestone and open an issue that contributes to it. Check the instructions and decision needed.

3Record actual progress

When the task is complete, record the decision and update its status. Return to the project and review the rest of the milestone’s intended outcome before marking the milestone complete.

4Explain the impact on the goal

Return to the initiative and assess the project alongside the other linked work. Post an update explaining what the progress means for the wider plan.

Put it into practice

The same work is understandable at every planning level. Review status and health at each level instead of assuming task completion finishes its parents.
